SK8 for Life

Hermon, ME – April 2025 — Hermon Middle School's halls were bursting with energy, creativity, and school spirit during its two-day “Spring into the Arts” program on April 17th and 18th. The annual event brought students and staff together to celebrate visual art, music, performance, teamwork, and community connection through an engaging schedule packed with activities.

Day 1 – Thursday, April 17th: Creativity and Performance in Motion

The festivities kicked off early with “HMS Survivor,” a friendly competition that mixed fun challenges with teamwork. Grades 5–8 took turns participating in Survivor games and working on the Inspirational Poster Contest, creating motivational messages and artistic visuals to decorate the school.

Later in the morning, students walked to Hermon High School to enjoy a dazzling performance by the HHS Show Choir featuring selections from Wicked, alongside musical numbers by the high school’s talented musicians.

Back at HMS, students worked in their homerooms on creative door decorations and were introduced to their grade-level dance challenges as part of the upcoming competition. Each grade had its own unique dance party theme, from the viral moves of “Everyday I’m Shufflin’” for Grade 8 to the energy-packed “30 Second Dance Party” videos for the lower grades.

Lunchtime offered a well-earned break, followed by homeroom time and the much-anticipated Talent Show, where students wowed peers with singing, dancing, magic tricks, and comedy. The afternoon concluded with a full-school walk around the building and the Civic Oration presentations—giving student speakers a platform to share their voices on topics they’re passionate about.

Day 2 – Friday, April 18th: Workshops, Voting, and Grand Finale

Friday began with a structured homeroom check-in, where students reviewed the day’s agenda before heading to the SK8 4 Life Presentation, a powerful program focused on resilience, positive choices, and mental health awareness.

The rest of the morning was dedicated to interactive arts and enrichment workshops. Students rotated through Workshop A, B, and later C, exploring new skills and collaborating across grades. Between workshops, students had time to put finishing touches on their decorated doors and rehearse their dance routines.

A unique part of the day involved door viewing and voting, where homerooms judged one another’s decorations, fostering appreciation for each other’s creativity and teamwork.

The program culminated in a high-energy Whole School Assembly featuring the TikTok Dance Competition, where four homeroom winners from each grade showed off their best moves. The assembly also included recognition for Civic Oration winners, Student of the Month, Honor Roll recipients, and the announcement of winners for the door decorating contest and HMS Survivor challenge.
